Case Studies
Apogee has worked on a number of projects since 2004, below is a summary of some of the projects that we have been involved in.
Webstar Lane - Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment

In conjunction with Webstar Lane five series of maps were produced to show the distribution of pharmaceutical services in London Borough of Croydon, Southend-on-Sea, London Borough of Bexley, London Borough of Harrow and the London Borough of Barnet. The maps showed all of the pharmacies within each area, the services they provided and their opening hours. Buffers were added to some of the maps to demonstrate how much of each region was covered by each service. Some maps had additional information showing the age distribution of local residents as well as comparing services with the level of deprivation in each area. MapInfo Pro v12.5 was used to produce these maps. The maps formed part of a larger document produced by Webstar Lane.
Sky - DSAT
Apogee has worked with Sky for over seven years maintaining the database that determines which regional television service a customer will receive for BBC, ITV and Channel4, known as the "DSAT Geography".
Changes to the UK postcode geography affecting the records held within their databases are analysed using PAF® (Royal Mail Postcode Address File) ensuring that the records held in the database are up to date and that this accurately links to other datasets held within their systems. The results are mapped to give an instant picture of what areas of the UK have been affected. If a customer subsequently queries any change to their service it can easily be identified via the map release and linked back to a particular monthly update. The work flows developed for the delivery of these services incorporate internal cross checks and validations to ensure that updates delivered are valid and accurate, proving ability to process large datasets for organisations and to deliver a repeatable high quality and consistent service.
ITV - DSAT
Apogee also uses PAF to update a postcode sector version of the DSAT file (described above) for ITV. This service is provided bi-annually. Maps showing affected areas are also produced.
ITV and Sky
Working with both the satellite broadcaster and ITV Apogee created new regions in the DSAT geography to emulate the terrestrial broadcasting. This project required enhanced knowledge of postcode geography. Interpretation of the requirements of a large scale corporation and problem solving to ensure all parties satisfied with result.
Freeview and WDMP
WDMP are "an award-winning direct response and relationship marketing agency". Working with this company and Freeview (the UK's Digital Terrestrial Television broadcaster), Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) coverage data was used to identify postcodes that would be new to Digital or new to High Definition digital television at the point of switchover. The data provided was used to door-drop information about Switchover to households affected.
Tesco and Dixons
Produced maps of DTT coverage around store locations. This involved data analysis to identify store locations that would benefit from stocking certain products.
JFMG - MapInfo Training
Apogee was asked to spend some time with senior engineers to assist them to get the most from their GIS system. A bespoke course was created to meet their needs by looking at how they use GIS and how it could be enhanced to improve their service delivery.
JFMG - Data Supply
Process PAF data to obtain basic address details for each postcode, i.e. one record of PAF for each postcode. Data used on their web-site to give user a “check” that they have selected the correct location. This product is available to other clients as Street-Level PAF.
Process OS OpenData Code-Point data into MapInfo/MS Access in order that they can read the data directly into their systems.
Birkbeck College
Produced training material on how to set-up a new business used by students studying GIS.
Joint Radio Company
Supplied JRC with MapInfo Strategi data. Processed the data from MID/MIF files into MapInfo tables and joined North and South into a single GB file.
GfK
Produced a series of maps which combined DTT coverage data with GfK company information about take-up of digital television.
